Most visitors to Albania tick off Berat, Gjirokaster, Ksamil and the Riviera. Excellent choices. But Albania's real magic often hides further afield — down unmarked roads, in river valleys and hilltop villages that barely appear on tourist maps. A rental car is the only way to reach them.

1. Apollonia Archaeological Park (near Fier)

Founded in the 6th century BC, Apollonia was one of the largest settlements on the Adriatic Sea — so respected that Julius Caesar sent his nephew Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus) to study there. Today: large open grounds, old columns, a 2nd-century odeon, and a Byzantine monastery with a remarkable small museum of statues. Far fewer crowds than Butrint. Approximately 15 minutes from Fier by car. Open from 9am.

Combine Apollonia with the nearby Zvernec Island Monastery (accessible via a wooden boardwalk over a lagoon near Vlore) on the same day — it is 45 minutes further south.

2. Gjipe Beach (between Dhermi and Palasa)

One of the most beautiful hidden beaches in Albania. Drive to the cliff-top car park on the SH8, then hike 20-25 minutes down a rocky trail to a stunning cove wedged between towering limestone cliffs. Impossibly clear water. Almost no development. An SUV or high-clearance car is recommended for the access track in dry conditions.

3. Permet and the Benja Thermal Baths

Permet sits in the Vjosa River valley in southeastern Albania — a charming slow-travel town known for raki distilleries, fresh river fish, and genuine Albanian mountain hospitality. 8km outside Permet, the Benja Thermal Baths flow from natural hot springs beneath a magnificent Ottoman-era stone arch bridge. You swim in warm sulphuric water in the open air surrounded by mountains and the Lengarica Canyon. Almost entirely off the tourist radar. Drive time from Gjirokaster: approximately 1.5 hours.

4. Osumi Canyon (near Berat)

Often called the Grand Canyon of Albania — a dramatic river gorge between Berat and Corovode. In spring and early summer when water levels are suitable, hire a canoe or inflatable kayak locally to float through the canyon walls. Check locally on road quality before committing a low-clearance economy car to the final stretch of the approach road.

5. Koman Lake and the Ferry to Valbona

Drive from Shkoder to Koman (about 1 hour on a winding mountain road) and board the 2-hour ferry through a spectacular fjord-like gorge — dramatically narrow limestone walls, emerald water. One of the most cinematic journeys in Europe. Requires advance ferry booking in peak season.

6. Qeparo — The Cliff-Top Village

Most tourists drive straight past the turn-off. Qeparo's old stone village sits on a clifftop above the SH8 with panoramic views down the Riviera coast. Completely uncommercialized — it feels like stepping back 50 years. A 20-minute detour from the main road.

7. Drino Valley and Ali Pasha's Aqueduct (near Gjirokaster)

The Drino Valley south of Gjirokaster hides the ruins of Ali Pasha's 19th-century Ottoman Aqueduct. A short hike from a roadside car park. Spectacular valley views on the drive down. Most visitors to Gjirokaster never find it.

8. Zogaj — The Secret Lake Shore (near Shkoder)

Drive 15 minutes from Shkoder city centre to Zogaj village on the shore of Lake Shkodra — the largest lake in Southern Europe. Family tavernas serving fresh lake fish, swimming platforms on clear water, views across to the Montenegrin mountains. Almost no mass tourism. One of Albania's best-kept secrets.
