Best Rent A CarThe Albanian Alps — the Bjeshkët e Nemuna, Accursed Mountains — are among the wildest landscapes in Europe. Theth and Valbona sit deep inside these mountains, accessible only by road. Those roads have improved significantly but still demand respect.
The main road to Theth from Shkoder is now largely paved tarmac after significant investment. The upper mountain section above Qafa e Thores involves steep switchbacks and some gravel. An SUV is strongly recommended. In dry summer conditions a competent driver in an economy car can manage — but rain dramatically changes the road surface.
⚠️ Driving on roads likely to cause underbody or suspension damage constitutes unauthorised use under our T&Cs and may void your insurance coverage. For Theth, book our SUV category — tell us your route when booking.
The road to Valbona from Bajram Curri is entirely paved. An economy or compact car handles it in summer. The valley is extraordinary — glacial rivers, pine forests, Prokletije peaks rising above. Many visitors combine Valbona and Theth by hiking the famous pass trail between them.
Drive to Koman from Shkoder (about 1 hour on a winding mountain road), take the 2-hour scenic ferry through a spectacular fjord-like gorge, and continue by car to Bajram Curri. One of the most dramatic journeys in Europe — requires an early start and advance ferry booking.
| Destination | From Shkoder | Road Quality | Our Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theth | approx. 2.5 hours | Mostly paved, gravel upper section | SUV recommended |
| Valbona via Komani ferry | approx. 3.5 hrs total | Ferry plus fully paved road | Economy or Compact OK in summer |
| Shkoder from Tirana | approx. 1.5 hrs | Full highway SH4 | Any car |
