What Is the Llogara Pass?
The Llogara Pass sits at 1,043 metres above sea level in the Ceraunian Mountains on the SH8 highway between Vlore and the Albanian Riviera. The road climbs from sea level through Llogara National Park — dense pine forests, dramatic switchbacks, and then at the summit the Ionian Sea appears below you in a panorama that genuinely stops people in their tracks.
The New Llogara Tunnel: Pass vs. Tunnel in 2026
In July 2024, the 6km Llogara Tunnel officially opened — a EUR 140 million infrastructure project that cuts directly under the mountains. The passenger-car toll is ALL 250 one-way when toll collection is active. You now have a genuine choice every time you travel this stretch.

Our recommendation: take the Pass road going south (Vlore to Riviera) for the full experience. Use the tunnel on the way back north. Traffic on the Pass road is much lighter now that most trucks and through-traffic use the tunnel.
Driving the Pass: What to Expect
- The road is fully paved and in decent condition throughout
- Tight switchbacks — average speed through the curves is 30-40 km/h
- Maximum speed in the tunnel: 80 km/h
- Several pull-off spots for photos and viewpoints — use them
- Livestock (goats especially) frequently on the road — slow down on blind corners
- No fuel stations on the pass — fill up in Vlore or Dhermi before and after
When NOT to Drive the Pass
- In fog — common in autumn and winter mornings; use the tunnel instead
- In heavy rain — wet switchbacks are significantly more demanding
- In winter snow — the pass can be closed; the tunnel remains open
- At night if you are unfamiliar with the road — drive it in daylight first
Do You Need a 4x4 for the Pass?
No. Any standard economy or compact car handles the Llogara Pass comfortably in good weather. The road is paved end-to-end. You do not need an SUV specifically for the pass — only for off-road tracks leading to remote beaches below.
What to Stop For at the Summit
- Restaurant Apollonia — At the very top. Excellent food, incredible views. Stop for byrek and coffee as a minimum.
- The Big Bunker viewpoint — A communist-era bunker with a panoramic terrace over the Ionian Sea.
- Caesar's Pass marker — A short signed path to a lookout named for Julius Caesar, who reportedly marched his army through here in 48 BC.
