Shkoder is northern Albania's most vibrant city — Albania's fifth-largest, historically one of its most important, and the gateway to the Albanian Alps. Most travellers rush through on the way to Theth. Those who stay discover a genuinely wonderful city.
Getting to Shkoder
Shkoder is approximately 100km north of Tirana via the SH4 highway — approximately 1.5 hours. A fast, modern road that offers views of the Adriatic plain and, as you approach Shkoder, the first glimpse of the Albanian Alps ahead.
Rozafa Castle
The city's iconic medieval fortress sits on a rocky hill above the confluence of the Drin, Buna, and Kir rivers. Views from the battlements take in Lake Shkodra, the rivers below, and on clear days the mountains beyond the Montenegrin border. Drive up to the car park — the easiest access. Open daily.
Marubi National Photography Museum
One of the finest photography museums in the Balkans — housing 150,000 glass plates from the 19th and early 20th century that document Albanian life in extraordinary detail. In the city centre, easy to park nearby. Do not miss this.
Lake Shkodra (Skadar Lake)
The largest lake in Southern Europe (shared with Montenegro) is accessible by car in approximately 15-20 minutes from Shkoder city centre. Drive to Zogaj village on the Albanian shore for a completely different, peaceful experience — family tavernas serving fresh lake fish, swimming platforms on clear water, and views across to the Montenegrin mountains. Almost no mass tourism here.
Zogaj is one of Albania's best-kept secrets. Arrive for lunch at one of the family restaurants on the waterfront, order the lake trout or carp, and stay the afternoon. The village feels untouched by mass tourism.
Shkoder as Base for the Albanian Alps
Shkoder is the essential staging point for trips to Theth, Valbona, and the Komani Lake ferry. Stock up on fuel and supplies here before heading into the mountains — petrol stations north of Shkoder become increasingly sparse.
