Albania Family Road Trip Guide 2026 — Driving with Kids | Best Rent A Car
Planning an Albania family road trip? Car seats, best family routes, beaches for kids, and 7-seater options from Best Rent A Car Albania.
Albania is a fantastic destination for families — genuinely warm towards children, affordable, and full of beaches, castles and natural beauty that captivates all ages. Here is everything you need to plan a successful family road trip.
Car Seats and Child Requirements
Albanian law requires children under 12 years old or shorter than 135cm to use an appropriate child restraint. Children under 4 must sit in the rear seat in a child seat.
- Baby / child seat available from Best Rent A Car: EUR 3 per day
- Request at booking — summer availability is limited, book early
- Bringing your own seat from home is also an option and may provide the best fit
Book your child seat at the same time as your car, especially June to September. They are our most requested extra and run out first in peak season.

Best Beaches for Families with Children
Borsh
Long, gentle pebble beach, calmer waters, far less crowded than Ksamil in summer. Good shallow areas for young children.
Ksamil
The turquoise lagoon areas are shallow and calm. Very crowded July to August — visit early morning. Park outside the village and walk.
Himare
Town beach has calmer conditions than exposed clifftop beaches, with lifeguards in summer.
Durres
Nearest sandy beach to Tirana (approx. 45 min drive), good facilities, calmer Adriatic waters.
Best Sights for Kids
Bunk'Art Tirana
Massive Cold War bunker converted into a museum. Kids are fascinated by underground tunnels and history.
Berat Castle
A still-inhabited castle neighbourhood with easy flat walking for younger children.
Butrint National Park
Roman ruins in a forest and lagoon setting. Like a history adventure playground.
Rozafa Castle Shkoder
Excellent views, easy access by car, and a dramatic legend about the castle's construction to tell the kids.
Llogara Pass
The mountain viewpoint is genuinely awe-inspiring for children and adults alike. Stop at the summit restaurant.
Family Road Trip Tips
- Drive in the coolest parts of the day in summer — early mornings and after 5pm. Peak afternoon heat (35+ degrees C) in July to August makes long drives uncomfortable.
- Always have water, snacks and sun protection. Petrol stations in rural areas also sell basic supplies but not always reliably.
- Albania is a very child-friendly culture — locals genuinely delight in meeting your children and many restaurants cater well to families.
- Avoid mountain roads at night. Stick to fully paved routes for family trips unless specifically equipped with an SUV for mountain adventures.
