Kruje: The Easiest Half-Day Trip
Just 45 minutes north of Tirana, Kruje is Albania's most accessible historical site. Skanderbeg's 15th-century castle sits above a town famous for its traditional bazaar — one of the best places in Albania to buy handmade carpets, antique metalwork, and traditional crafts. Combine with a lunch stop for a perfect half-day.
Durres: Beach Day from the Capital
Albania's second city and main port, 40 minutes from Tirana on the A2 motorway. The city beach is wide and sandy — calmer Adriatic waters than the Ionian Riviera, making it good for families. The 2nd-century Roman Amphitheatre (one of the largest in the Balkans) sits in the middle of the modern city — free to view from the road, tickets for inside.
Dajti National Park: Mountains Above Tirana
Drive 30 minutes east of Tirana to Dajti National Park — 3,000 hectares of forest on the mountain overlooking the capital. Take the Dajti Express cable car to the summit (or drive up), and look down at Tirana spread across the plain. Good hiking trails, restaurants with mountain views, and a completely different atmosphere from the busy city below.
Apollonia: Ancient Ruins Without the Crowds
1.5 hours south of Tirana near Fier, Apollonia was one of the most significant cities of the ancient Adriatic world — founded 6th century BC, later the city where Julius Caesar sent the future Emperor Augustus to study. The archaeological park is large, peaceful, and far less visited than Butrint. Ideal for history lovers who want space and quiet.
Apollonia opens at 9am. Arriving early means you will often have the site almost entirely to yourself — a rare experience at an archaeological site of this quality and scale.
