Berat and Gjirokaster by Car: Albania's Twin UNESCO Cities Guide

Complete driving guide to Berat and Gjirokaster — Albania's two UNESCO World Heritage cities. Distances, parking, what to see and tips. Best Rent A Car Albania.

Berat and Gjirokaster share Albania's only UNESCO World Heritage dual listing — both Historic Cities. They are different in almost every way except their extraordinary quality. Together they form the centrepiece of any Albania road trip.

Berat: The City of a Thousand Windows

Berat sits on the Osum River, its distinctive white Ottoman houses stacked up a steep hillside, each face covered in large windows that earn it the City of a Thousand Windows name. It is genuinely beautiful — and more compact and manageable than many historic cities.

Getting to Berat

Approximately 120km south of Tirana on the SH3 — approximately 2.5 hours. The road is good quality throughout. Drive directly into the lower city (Mangalem quarter) and park near the river.

What to See in Berat

  • Berat Castle — A still-inhabited castle neighbourhood with churches, a mosque, and views over the city. Built in the 13th century.
  • Onufri Museum — Inside the Church of the Dormition within the castle. Houses extraordinary 16th-century icons by master painter Onufri. Do not miss this.
  • Mangalem Quarter — The Ottoman neighbourhood below the castle. Wander the stepped streets, drink coffee at a terrace overlooking the river.
  • Gorica Quarter — Cross the Ottoman bridge to the smaller neighbourhood on the other bank. Great photos of the hillside from across the river.

Parking in Berat

Free street parking is generally easy to find near the river in the lower town. In peak summer (July and August) arrive early as visitor numbers increase significantly.

Gjirokaster: The City of Stone

Gjirokaster is more dramatic, more austere, and arguably more atmospheric than Berat. Grey stone houses with distinctive slate roofs climb a steep hillside to a massive medieval castle. It is unlike anywhere else in the Balkans.

Getting to Gjirokaster

Approximately 90km south of Berat — approximately 2 hours via the Drino Valley, one of the most beautiful drives in Albania. Drive into the lower town and park — do not attempt to drive the ancient cobblestone streets of the old quarter.

Do not attempt to drive the old cobblestone streets of Gjirokaster's upper old town. Park in the lower town and walk up. The streets are extremely rough and narrow — even small cars risk underbody damage and it is very difficult to turn around.

What to See in Gjirokaster

  • Gjirokaster Castle — Massive medieval fortress housing a Cold War US Air Force jet (captured spy plane), cannon galleries, prison cells, and sweeping Drino Valley views. Allow 2 or more hours.
  • Old Bazaar (Carshia e Vjeter) — Ottoman-era bazaar with craft shops, stone-arched passages, and excellent coffee houses.
  • Ethnographic Museum — Birthplace of Albanian communist dictator Enver Hoxha, converted into a museum of traditional Albanian mountain life.
  • Ali Pasha Bridge — A 20-minute walk from the castle, this 19th-century bridge over the Drino Gorge is both engineering feat and beautiful viewpoint.

Day Trips from Gjirokaster

  • Blue Eye / Syri i Kalter — 30 min drive. A stunning natural spring of impossibly blue water in a forest setting. Allow 2-3 hours. Go early.
  • Butrint National Park — 1.5 hrs drive east toward Saranda. UNESCO Roman ruins on a lagoon.
  • Permet and Benja Thermal Baths — 1.5 hrs east. Outdoor thermal pools under an Ottoman stone arch bridge in the Lengarica Canyon.
